STEWARDSHIP

If persons wish to be more actively involved in improving wetlands in Illinois, they may dedicate a portion of their time to the improvement or study of a specific wetland. Persons may improve the general public's appreciation for a site by using it as a venue for group recreational activities such as birding. They may also participate in the physical enhancement of a wetland by organizing a clean-up or group planting of native vegetation at the site.

By undertaking a scientific study of a wetland through a program such as Illinois' Wetland Watch, individuals may increase the amount of information known about a specific site, and about wetlands in general. Wetland Watch is one of a number of programs IDNR sponsors in which a group is given the responsibility of scientifically monitoring a specific resource and reporting the collected data to IDNR for inclusion into a continually updated database.
