Illinois Energy Awareness
Oil and Gas Display
The Illinois Petroleum Resources Board (IPRB) maintains a "rolling oil and gas education exhibit", which is available for fairs and school presentations. As with the Rocks and Minerals Box, the Oil and Gas exhibit is available for earth days and eco-meets, and can be toured at both of the Illinois state Fairs, Springfild and DuQuoin".
The exhibit contains working models of a drill rig and pump jack for resource exploration and production of curde oil and natural gas. The exhibit includes displays of photographs and historic information on the oil and gas industry and its economic importance to Illinois.
School presentations made by IPRB begin with the Board fowarding an education package to the teacher or cooridinator. The package can then be used by the teachers to enhance their earth science lessons prior to the education exhibit's visit, or follow up afterwards. The IPRB presentation is directed for grade levels 4 - 8, but can be modified for younger and older students.
Schedule the "rolling oil and gas education exhibit" for your class or community event, or request classroom materials to enhance your earth science lessons with:
- Geology and formation of crude oil
- Historic and present day technology used to find and produce crude oil
- Safety measures for oilfield equipment
- Petrochemicals and their rolee in our lives
- Environmental impacts of oil and gas production
The Illinois Petroleum Resources Board has also created a 12 minute video, The Story of Petrolem. To Watch the video, link to the Illinois Resources Petroleum Board's Teachers Resource page to get the whole story.
