Location: Jo Daviess County, 10.2 miles NW of Stockton on Scout Camp Rd. Property in 2 locations; a 280 acre parcel and a 772.5 acre parcel.

Description :
Total Acres: 1052.5 Water Acres: 2.5, Crop Land Acres: 439, Timber and Pasture Acres: 511, Nature Preserve Acres: 100, Huntable Acres: 1052.5. The vegetative cover is a mixture of steep timbered slopes and bluffs with grasslands, rowcrops, and hayfields predominate on ridge tops. The topography can be severe especially bordering the Apple River. This habitat should provide good hunting for squirrel, rabbit, turkey and deer. Habitat restoration consisting of hardwood and prairie plantings will be ongoing and should enhance future wildlife populations.

Hunting:
Hunting is allowed in the Salem Unit on either side of Salem Road within DNR boundaries. Also, within the Thompson Unit is a Nature Preserve where deer hunting is allowed. Hunting is allowed within the registry reserve that surrounds the Nature Preserve.

Area Regulations

  1. All turkey and firearm deer hunters must obtain a site specific permit, which will be issued through the Permit Office in Springfield. Permits valid for JoDaviess Co. will not be valid at Apple River Canyon Salem & Thompson Units. A windshield permit will be issued by Apple River Canyon State Park and must be displayed during the hunt. Successful deer and turkey hunters must still follow statewide checking procedures as specified by the permit.
  2. All other hunting is closed during the firearm deer season except coyotes may be taken by firearm deer hunters w/valid Apple River Area permits.
  3. All Statewide Regulations apply.
  4. Hunting is restricted to areas posted as open to hunting
  5. Hunters are required to sign in and sign out and record species harvested at the hunter registration box provided in parking lots 1 or 2.
  6. Site is closed to non-hunters during firearm deer season, and until 1PM during Spring Turkey Season. Exceptions: supervising adults during youth hunts.
  7. It shall be unlawful to construct or to use any tree stand that utilizes nails, screws, wire or any device which pierces or cuts the bark of the tree on which it is installed. Any tree stand must be portable and removed from the tree at the end of each day.
  8. It shall be unlawful for any person to possess or to consume beer, wine, or intoxicating liquors while hunting on the area.
  9. No ground fires or camping allowed.
  10. For Youth Deer & Youth Turkey seasons, Jo Daviess County permit holders that contact the site office will be issued a windshield permit until quotas are reached.
