Ray Norbut Fish & Wildlife Area is characterized as an ideal hunting area for both forest game and upland game species. This site is also rich in archeologic and historic value and is presently a bald eagle winter roosting area along the bluffs of the Illinois River. Part of the area is highway right-of-way under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation. Passage through the area is permitted but state law prohibits hunting along, upon, across, or from any public right-of-way.

LOCATION: Ray Norbut Fish & Wildlife Area is located five miles east of Griggsville off Route 107 and two miles south of Valley City along the Illinois River in Pike County.

Trapping is also allowed for furbearing mammals. A special trapping permit is issued through a site drawing.

SITE REGULATIONS:

  1. Hunting is prohibited where posted.
  2. It is unlawful to construct or to use any tree stand using a device which pierces or cuts the bark of the tree. Only one portable stand may be used and must be labeled with hunters name, address, and telphone number.
  3. All hunting is to be with shotgun, handgun (deer), .22 rimfire, muzzleloader, and archery. State regulations apply.
  4. Hunters are required to sign in and out and to record the day's harvest.
  5. Firearm Deer: A quota of hunters will be filled by special permit; drawing in Springfield.
    Late-Winter Deer Season (formerly Handgun Season): A quota of hunters will be filled on a sign-in sheet at the office each morning. Pike County permit or Ray Norbut SFWA permit required.
    Archery Deer: No quota; statewide permit required.
