NAME: FOX RIDGE STATE PARK

LOCATION: Eight miles southeast of Charleston, 12 miles north of Greenup on Illinois Route 130.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA:

The area lies along the Embarras River, and is characterized by wooded ravines, conifer plantations, and native and restored prairie openings. The woodlands at Fox Ridge are the largest contiguous block of mature hardwoods in the Embarras basin.

SITE REGULATIONS:

1. Free site Hunting Permits (windshield cards) are required for species as noted. These are available online at www.dnr.illinois.gov. Navigate to "hunting/trapping: and then "public hunting areas" to print these permits. Hunters will be required to return to this website prior to February 15th each year to record harvest information. Failure to submit data will result in loss of hunting privileges for the following year.
2. Hunting restricted to designated wildlife management areas, including the Sherwood Tract on the south side of the park.
3. Dove hunters must use only size 7 ½ or smaller bismuth or lead shot, or size 6 or smaller steel shot. Dove hunters not hunting in dove management fields must hunt at least 100 yards from the edge of dove management fields. After Sept. 5, Dove Management Fields will be open from noon to sunset.
4. No trapping is allowed on this site.
5. No permanent stands or stands/steps which pierce the bark of trees are allowed. Check with site for special regulations regarding temporary stands.
6. Squirrels may be taken with .22 caliber rimfire rifle, shotgun, or muzzleloader. NO PISTOLS, AIR RIFLES, BB GUNS, OR PELLET GUNS ARE ALLOWED ON THE SITE.
7. Waterfowl hunting is limited to the Embarras River and its floodwaters in the wildlife management area. Permanent blinds and/or pits are prohibited.
8. Non-toxic shot must be used for all waterfowl hunting.
9. The area is closed to all hunting activity other than deer hunting during the firearm deer season.
10. Hunters engaged in quail, rabbit, pheasant, or Hungarian partridge hunting must wear a cap and upper outer garment of blaze orange of at least 400 square inches.
11. Shotgun, muzzleloader and handgun are allowed during the firearm deer season. All state regulations apply. Consult the Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations for caliber and usage restrictions.
12. This area is subject to prescribed burns in the fall. Burns will be announced prior to ignition by 3 horn blasts.

OTHER SITE FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS: Picnicking, camping, hiking, fishing (fishing at Ridge Lake is by reservation only with the Illinois Natural History Survey), fitness trail.
