The
Aux Sable access contains three pieces of history right in the same area.
Lock #8 of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the locktender's house, and
the rebuilt Aux Sable Creek aqueduct that was constructed to carry the canal
over Aux Sable Creek. This access area provides a very historic and scenic
starting point for any recreational endeavor along the Illinois & Michigan
Canal State Trail. A new parking area and restrooms were added recently
to make it more convenient for visiting guests. A drinking fountain is also
available along with park benches to allow visitors to sit and enjoy the
beauty and history that surrounds them.
Fishing
The Aux Sable access is a peaceful area, perfect for casting a
line in the water. Anglers are able to fish for bass, crappie,
catfish, bluegill and bullhead.
Boating
Canoeing is available for 15 miles between Channahon and Gebhard
Woods. Aux Sable is the perfect half way point to either put in,
take out, or just stop for lunch.
