PRIVATE FISH DEALERS
Pond and lake owners may desire to purchase their own fish for stocking purposes from a
private source. There are numerous dealers who raise and supply fish for stocking purposes.
Their prices vary according to the kind, size, availability, and delivery method.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources does not assume any responsibility,
recommend, or endorse the following listings, but provides this for the convenience of those
who may desire a private source of fish for stocking purposes. It is recommended that those
who desire to purchase fish consult with their local district fisheries biologist
or Natural Resources Conservation Service Office.
It is unlawful for any person(s) to import into the State or possess in the State live diploid
grass carp (white amur), silver carp, bighead carp or hybrid grass carp, except that a person
possessing an aquaculture permit and letters of authorization may do so. It is unlawful for
any person(s) to import, possess, or stock walking catfish. To possess or stock triploid grass
carp, the water owner’s name must appear on the aquaculture permit holder’s restricted
species transportation permit. The pond owner may legally possess and/or transport triploid
grass carp over 4" in length if he possesses a bill of sale from the aquaculture permit holder
or licensed fish dealer certifying that these fish have a triploid number of chromosomes.
